Ho visitato Yarmouk camp tra il 2008 e il 2009, il campo profughi situato nella periferia di Damasco che, fino a prima del conflitto iniziato nel 2011, riuniva la più grande comunità di rifugiati palestinesi in Siria: almeno tre generazioni al completo ed un museo estemporaneo sulla storia della Palestina, costruito dai primi rifugiati.
Anche se le condizioni nei campi profughi cambiano sostanzialmente da campo a campo, essere rifugiati significa comunque assumere la sospensione: tra il vivere giorno per giorno e l’ideale momento di ritorno a partire dal quale poi ricominciare.
H., A. e E. sono tre fratelli che abitavano alla fine di Lubia street: una delle strade principali del campo, il cui nome deriva dall’omonima città in Palestina da dove proveniva la gente che inizialmente vi si era insediata. Il corner, come lo chiamavano i ragazzi, all’interno del campo era “il posto”, dove ci si dava gli appuntamenti e poi si restava per ore, dove si scambiavano le inquietudini e le curiosità verso il resto del mondo, verso un’Europa vista nei film.
I visited Yarmouk refugee camp between 2008 and 2009. Located on the outskirts of Damascus, before the war started in 2011 the camp hosted the largest community of Palestinian refugees: at least three generations in Syria and an extemporary museum on Palestinian history, built by the first refugees.
Although conditions significantly vary from one refugee camp to another, being a refugee means being suspended between living life day-to-day and dreaming about the ideal moment when one will finally go back, to start life over again.
H., A. e E. are three brothers who lived at the end of Lubia street, one of the main streets of the camp. The street was named after the Palestinian city of Lubia, hometown to the people who first settled in this area. The corner – as the guys used to call it, in English – was “the place to be” inside the camp, the meeting place, where they would hang out for hours. They would exchange hopes and fears, as well as questions about the rest of the world and the Europe they saw in the movies.
